Minecraft Banner Designs

Every design here is buildable: six layers at most, real patterns, real dyes. Each one shows the loom sequence that makes it — the part a picture on Pinterest cannot give you — and opens in the editor if you want to change the colours.

Country flags

Minecraft has no thirds and no off-centre cross, so most flags are approximations — and each one says exactly where it bends. A few are exact: Japan, Poland, Ukraine, Scotland.

Why a design is a recipe, not a picture

A Minecraft banner is not drawn, it is stacked. You start with a coloured banner and put it in a loom with a dye, six times at most, and each step lays one of the game’s 42 patterns over what is already there. The finished banner is nothing but that sequence.

Which is why a screenshot of a banner is close to useless. You can see what someone made and still have no idea how — and the six-layer ceiling means guessing wrong is expensive in dye. Every design on this page carries its sequence, in order, by the pattern names the loom actually shows you.

81 of the 83 need nothing but a banner and dye. The other 2 use a charge — the eight patterns like the creeper and the skull that require a banner pattern item you have to find, trade for or craft first. Those are labelled, and their loom steps name the item, so you know before you walk to the loom rather than after.

How to build a banner design

  1. 1Craft the base bannerSix wool of the starting colour plus one stick. The design tells you which colour to start from — starting from the wrong one changes every layer after it.
  2. 2Open a loomTwo string over any plank. The loom takes the banner, a dye, and optionally a pattern item; none of these designs needs the third slot.
  3. 3Apply the patterns in orderBanner plus dye in, pick the named pattern, take the result out, repeat. Order is not cosmetic — a later layer paints over an earlier one.
  4. 4Or paste the give commandOn Java with cheats on, each design has a /give command in the 1.20.5+ item-component format that hands you the finished banner.
  5. 5Change the colours if you like"Open in editor" loads the design into the banner maker with its layers intact, so you can swap dyes without rebuilding the stack.

Questions about banner designs

How many layers can a Minecraft banner have?

A loom applies six and refuses a seventh. On Java a /give command can go to 16, but Bedrock only renders six however the banner was made — so every design here stays within six.

Why do two different flags look the same?

Because in six layers they genuinely are the same banner. Denmark and Switzerland both come out as a white cross on red once the Nordic offset is gone; Peru and Canada are both red-white-red without the maple leaf. Rather than delete one of each pair, the page keeps both and each says what it lost.

Do any of these need a banner pattern item?

2 of the 83 do, and they say so on the card and in their loom steps. Everything else uses only the geometric patterns, which need nothing but a dye. The charge patterns — globe, creeper, skull, flower, snout, flow, guster and the Thing — each need an item first, and several cannot be obtained on Bedrock at all.

Can I put these on a shield?

Yes, in a crafting table with a shield and the finished banner — but a shield is not the banner shrunk down. Its pattern area is smaller, so fine detail is resampled away. The banner maker shows the real shield render next to the banner so you can see which designs survive.

Why are the flags approximate?

The game has no thirds — the side stripes are a fifth of the width each — and no off-centre cross, so tricolours come out with a wide middle band and every Nordic flag comes out centred. Each flag says which compromise it made rather than pretending it is exact.

Can I use these designs in my world or on my server?

Yes, freely. They are geometry made from the game’s own patterns, and the loom steps are just instructions. No attribution needed.
