~ COMPLETE PATTERN REFERENCE ~

Minecraft Banner Patterns

There are 42 banner patterns in the game and no more — 34 of them you can pick straight from the loom with a dye, and 8 need a banner pattern item that cannot be crafted from scratch. Every one is drawn below with its name, its modern id, its pre-1.20.5 code, and exactly where the item comes from.

Loom patterns

Put a banner and any dye in a loom and these appear in the list. The dye sets the colour, so each of these is really 16 patterns. Six layers is the loom’s limit.

Charge patterns

These need a banner pattern item in the third loom slot. The item is not consumed, so one lasts forever — but you have to find or buy it first, and one of them (Globe) is Java-only.

What a banner pattern actually is

A banner is a base colour plus up to six pattern layers. Each layer is one pattern in one dye, applied in order, and later layers paint over earlier ones — which is what lets a light layer cut a shape back out of a dark one.

The loom shows you the result before you commit, and the pattern item (for the 8 charge patterns) is never used up. On Bedrock the six-layer cap is hard; on Java a /give command can stack up to sixteen, which is how designs that no loom can produce end up in creative worlds.

How to make a banner pattern in Minecraft

  1. 1.Craft a loom Two string over two planks in a crafting grid.
  2. 2.Place the banner Put your banner in the loom’s first slot. Its colour is the base.
  3. 3.Add a dye The dye in the second slot is the colour the pattern will be drawn in.
  4. 4.Pick the pattern Choose from the list that appears. For a charge pattern, put its banner pattern item in the third slot first — it is not consumed.
  5. 5.Repeat up to six times Each pass adds one layer. Six is the maximum a loom will apply.

Questions

How many banner patterns are there in Minecraft?

42 — 34 available from the loom with just a dye, and 8 that require a banner pattern item. That is the complete set; the variety comes from stacking up to six of them in different dyes.

What is the recipe for a banner pattern?

Loom patterns have no recipe — you select them in the loom and pay one dye. The 8 charge patterns need an item, and only some of those are crafted: Flower, Creeper, Skull and Thing come from paper plus one ingredient, Globe is bought from a master-level cartographer, Snout is found in bastion remnant chests, and Flow and Guster come out of ominous vaults in trial chambers.

Why can I only add six layers?

The loom stops at six on both editions. On Java you can go up to sixteen with a /give command, but no loom will produce it and Bedrock will not render past six.

Do banner pattern items get used up?

No. The item stays in the loom slot after the pattern is applied, so one Flower Banner Pattern makes as many flower charges as you like.

Are all the patterns on Bedrock?

The loom patterns are. All 34 loom patterns are. Of the 8 charge patterns, only Globe is missing on Bedrock — its item comes from a cartographer trade that edition does not have. Every card below says which.
