How to make a QR code out of beads
Paste the link
A short link makes a small code. Twenty characters fit a version-2 code (25 squares across); a long tracking URL can need version 6 or more, which is a lot of beads. Shorten with your own domain or a link shortener you trust to keep alive.
Pick the craft and the colours
Perler or other 5 mm fuse beads, mini beads, cross stitch on aida, or a custom cell size. The two colours come from the real palette so the chart names the beads to buy; the contrast readout tells you whether a phone will separate them.
Set error correction and beads per module
Level M (15%) is right for a careful build; H (30%) forgives a few wrong beads at the cost of a bigger code. Two beads per module doubles the size and makes the code far easier to read — worth it for anything above version 2.
Watch the scan check
Every change re-scans the chart as if it were a photo of the ironed piece or the finished stitching, at the resolution a phone camera actually sees. Green means it reads back as your text; red names what to change.

Why handmade QR codes fail to scan — and what this tool does about it
A printed QR code is crisp black on white with a clean border. A beaded one has round beads with holes, a highlight on every bead, gaps on the pegboard, and colours that are never quite black or white. Each of those is a known failure, and each has a fix built in here.
No quiet zone
The single most common reason a craft QR code will not scan is that the code runs to the edge of the piece. A scanner finds the three corner squares by looking for a light border around them; without it, the finder patterns are never located. The chart always includes the border — four modules by default, the standard — as light beads or unstitched fabric, and the size readouts count it.
Not enough error correction
QR codes carry redundancy in four levels: L recovers 7% of damaged modules, M 15%, Q 25%, H 30%. A wrong bead, a hole that reads dark, a stitch pulled tight — each is damage. M is a sensible default; H is the safe choice when the code will be photographed from an angle or the piece will be handled. The trade-off is size: the same text at H can be two versions larger than at L.
Colours that look different but scan the same
Phones binarise the picture — every pixel becomes black or white by comparing it to its neighbours. Navy on cream works; grey on silver does not, however clear it looks to you. The tool computes the contrast ratio of the two colours you choose from the palette and marks anything under 3:1 as unscannable, which is where the decoder in the scan check actually starts failing.
Modules too small for the beads
A single 5 mm bead per module is fine for a small code once it is ironed, because the beads fuse into near-solid squares. On a pegboard before ironing, or with mini beads, the holes and gaps become a large part of each module. Setting two beads per module makes each square 10 mm and turns those artefacts into noise the error correction shrugs off.
Inverted codes
Light modules on a dark background are allowed by the standard and refused by many phone apps. The tool flags the swap and its scan check runs with inversion enabled so you can see whether your phone is likely to cope; when in doubt, keep the modules dark and the background light.
The same code, in every craft
A QR module is a square; any craft that makes square cells can make one. What changes is the cell size, which sets how big the finished piece is and how far away a phone can read it from.
Perler & fuse beads
One 29×29 pegboard holds a version-1 code with its full quiet zone exactly. A short link on a single board, ironed, scans from a phone held at arm’s length; the light border beads hold the piece together.
Mini beads
At 2.6 mm a version-3 code is under 10 cm across, small enough for a keychain. Use two beads per module — the holes are a larger share of each bead, and the code needs the margin.
Cross stitch & embroidery
Stitch only the dark squares in black on white aida and the fabric is the light half of the code. On 14-count a version-2 code is 25 stitches, about 4.5 cm; on 18-count it is 3.5 cm. Full crosses, pulled evenly, so every square reads solid.
Anything with square cells
Mosaic tiles, LEGO plates, a painted grid, a pixel-art print. Set a custom cell size and the tool reports the finished dimensions. Knitting and crochet stitches are not square — a knit module needs three stitches by four rows — so they are not offered here.
Which QR version do I need? Modules, capacity and beads by version
A QR code’s version is its size in modules: version 1 is 21×21, and each version adds four. The table gives the most characters a plain link can hold at each error-correction level, and what the code becomes in beads with the standard four-module quiet zone.

Capacity is for ordinary text and links (byte mode). A URL made only of capital letters and digits can hold more, and a purely numeric code more still, but the tool uses byte mode so that any link works as typed.
Frequently Asked Questions
Can you really make a QR code out of Perler beads?
Yes, and it scans — as long as the code keeps its quiet zone, the colours contrast, and the piece is ironed flat. A version-1 or version-2 code on one or four pegboards is a common first project. The tool’s scan check runs the same test a phone camera would on the chart it gives you.
Why won’t my Perler bead QR code scan?
In order of likelihood: the code has no light border (quiet zone); the two colours are too close in brightness; the modules are one small bead each and the holes and gaps confuse the reader; or the phone is too close and cannot focus. Add the border, use black on white, use two beads per module, and hold the phone a little further away.
Does a QR code have to be black and white?
No. It has to be dark on light with enough contrast. Navy, dark green or maroon on white, cream or pale yellow all read. What fails is two mid-tones — the tool shows the contrast ratio and marks anything under 3:1 as unscannable.
What size should a beaded QR code be?
Bigger is easier. A 5 mm bead per module gives a version-2 code of 16.5 cm with its border, readable from about a metre. Two beads per module doubles that and is far more forgiving of a bead out of place. For a keychain, use mini beads and a very short link.
Which error-correction level should I use?
M for a careful build with a short link; H when the piece will be handled, photographed at an angle, or made by a child. H makes the code larger for the same text, so keep the link short.
Can I encode Wi-Fi details, a phone number or plain text?
Anything that fits: a Wi-Fi string such as WIFI:T:WPA;S:name;P:password;; or a tel: link works the same as a web address. Longer text needs a larger version — the table above shows what fits at each size.
Does ironing change whether it scans?
It helps. Ironed beads fuse into near-solid squares and the surface goes flat, so there are no gaps or shadows. Iron evenly on both sides so nothing lifts, and do not over-iron, which spreads the beads and blurs the edges of the modules.
What fabric count works for a cross-stitch QR code?
Any, as long as every module is a full cross and the fabric is the light colour. 14-count gives 1.8 mm modules and a version-2 code about 4.5 cm wide; 11-count is bigger and easier to read. Keep the tension even so the squares stay square.
