How to Draw a Perler Bead Pattern

1

Set Your Canvas Size

Enter your target dimensions. 50×60 matches most standard kits. Go larger for wall pieces; smaller for accessories.

2

Choose Round or Square Drill View

Set your drill shape. Round for the classic look; square for full-coverage detail. Place drills by clicking or dragging. Flood-fill large color areas.

3

Review Drill Count & Adjust

Check the materials panel. If a color has very few drills, consider simplifying that section. Too many colors makes ordering expensive — aim for 20–40 colors for a balanced design.

4

Export PDF Chart

Download the PDF. It shows your design with DMC codes and a drill count per color. Use it to order a custom printed canvas or to source individual drill packs.

Features

DMC Drill Color Palette

The palette is based on the DMC numbering system used by diamond painting manufacturers worldwide. Each color shows its DMC code — the universal identifier when ordering drill refills or custom canvases.

Round & Square Drill Preview

Toggle between round drill and square drill canvas views. Round drills leave small gaps between diamonds; square drills interlock for full coverage. Design in the drill shape you plan to use.

Drill-by-Drill Placement

Place individual drills with the pen, flood-fill contiguous areas with the bucket, sample colors with the picker, or erase with the eraser. Keyboard shortcuts for all tools.

Drill Count & Bags Estimate

The materials panel shows the exact drill count per DMC color — and estimates how many bags (typically 200–300 drills per bag) you'll need for each color.

Custom Canvas Size

Default is 50×60 drills — a standard small canvas size. Go as small as 20×20 for keychains or as large as 100×100 for large-format art.

Printable PDF Drill Chart

The PDF shows your diamond layout with DMC codes in each cell, plus a color legend with drill counts. Use it when ordering a custom printed canvas or verifying a manufacturer's chart.

What Is Diamond Painting?

Diamond painting is a craft where you apply tiny faceted resin "drills" (sometimes called rhinestones or diamonds) onto an adhesive canvas to create a mosaic image. Each drill is the size of a pencil eraser, and they're placed using a stylus tool with wax on the tip. The finished piece resembles a glittery oil painting.

Diamond painting drills come in two shapes: round and square. Round drills are easier to place and more forgiving of gaps. Square drills are harder to work with but interlock perfectly for full coverage and a sharper image edge — preferred by experienced crafters for detailed designs.

Creating a custom diamond painting — instead of buying a kit — requires planning the color layout in advance. MakeBead's diamond painting designer lets you work out a design in DMC colors, check the drill count per color, and export a chart that a custom canvas printer can use directly, or that you can reference when sourcing individual drill colors.

Frequently Asked Questions

What's the difference between round and square drills?

Round drills are easier to pick up and place, and small gaps between them are barely visible. Square drills interlock edge-to-edge for full coverage and a sharper, more detailed final image. Square drills are harder to place but preferred for large complex designs.

How many drills come in a bag?

Standard diamond painting drill bags contain 200–300 individual drills. The materials panel in the designer estimates bag quantities per color based on this range so you know roughly how many bags to order.

Can I use this to order a custom canvas?

Yes. Export the PDF chart — it includes your design with DMC codes per cell and a full color list. Most custom canvas printing services accept this format or a color-coded PNG as their input file.

What canvas size should I choose?

20×20 to 30×30 for small pieces (keychain, card-sized). 50×60 is a common kit size — manageable for most crafters. 80×80 to 100×100 is large-format; plan for many hours of work.

How does the drill count help me order supplies?

The materials panel shows the exact drill count per DMC color. Divide by 200–300 to estimate bags needed. Add 10–15% buffer for dropped or wasted drills — this is normal in any diamond painting project.
