What Is Diamond Painting?

Diamond painting is a craft where you apply tiny faceted resin "drills" (sometimes called rhinestones or diamonds) onto an adhesive canvas to create a mosaic image. Each drill is the size of a pencil eraser, and they're placed using a stylus tool with wax on the tip. The finished piece resembles a glittery oil painting.

Diamond painting drills come in two shapes: round and square. Round drills are easier to place and more forgiving of gaps. Square drills are harder to work with but interlock perfectly for full coverage and a sharper image edge — preferred by experienced crafters for detailed designs.

Creating a custom diamond painting — instead of buying a kit — requires planning the color layout in advance. Planning a Custom Diamond Painting: A Practical Guide

Start with the size in drills, not in centimeters

Every drill — round or square — sits on a grid of about 2.5 mm, so four drills make one centimeter. That single number does most of your planning: a 40×40 design is a 10 cm square, the 50×60 default is roughly 12.5×15 cm, and the 100×100 maximum is a 25 cm canvas. Work out the finished size you want on the wall, divide by 2.5 mm, and you have your grid — before you place a single drill.

Leave a margin. Framed canvases need 1–2 cm of empty border on every side, which is 4–8 rows of your grid. If you design edge to edge, that border gets cut into the artwork or disappears under the frame. Sketching the border in first, as a blank ring, keeps the composition honest about the space it really has.

Keep the palette tight — every color is a bag, a symbol and a sorting tray

The DMC-numbered drill range runs to roughly 447 colors, and a photo converter will happily use a hundred of them. A hand-planned design should not. Each color on your chart becomes one bag to order, one symbol to read and one tray to sort — and a color used for a dozen drills costs the same bag as one used for a thousand. The materials panel shows the count for every DMC code live; when a color falls under about 50 drills, ask whether a neighbouring shade could absorb it.

Watch for confetti: single drills of one color scattered across an area of another. Confetti is the slowest part of any diamond painting, because every drill means a new color pick-up. The flood-fill tool is your friend here — consolidate small islands into solid regions, and reserve single-drill detail for the places that carry the image: eyes, highlights, lettering. Twenty to forty colors is the range where most custom designs stay both readable and orderable.

Round or square: decide before you draw, not after

Round drills leave tiny gaps between neighbours, which read as a soft sparkle and forgive a slightly off placement. Square drills interlock edge to edge, giving full coverage and crisp boundaries — but a square placed a hair off pushes its neighbours out of line, and the error travels along the row. The designer's round/square toggle is not cosmetic: it previews the gaps you will actually see, so text and hard-edged shapes can be checked in square view and soft gradients in round view before you commit.

A rule of thumb from finished canvases: lettering, logos and geometric borders look better in square; portraits, skies and anything with blended tones look fine in round and are far quicker to place. If you plan to have the canvas printed, the printer also needs the drill shape up front — the adhesive grid is cut differently for each.

From chart to canvas: what a printer needs, and what to check when it arrives

A custom canvas service needs three things, and the PDF export carries all of them: the grid with a DMC code or symbol in every cell, a legend that maps each symbol to its DMC number, and a drill count per color so they — or you — can pack the right bags. Order 10–15% more drills than the count says; drills get dropped, flicked and lost in every project, and running out of one color two rows from the end is the classic diamond painting frustration.

When the printed canvas arrives, check it against your chart before peeling any of the protective film: count the rows and columns at one corner, confirm the legend uses the same symbols as your PDF, and check that the drill bags are labelled with the DMC codes you specified rather than a printer's internal numbering. Keep the PDF — when you store leftover drills by DMC code after the project, that legend is what tells you which bag is which for the next canvas.

Common mistakes on a first custom design

Designing at screen size instead of drill size, so a "small" 30×30 design turns into a 7.5 cm miniature. Using thirty near-identical greys where six would do. Forgetting that a round-drill canvas shows the printed grid through the gaps, so the background color of the printed canvas matters. Skipping the count buffer. Each one is cheap to avoid at the planning stage and expensive once the canvas is printed — which is exactly what a designer on a blank grid is for.
