What Is Overlay Mosaic Crochet?
Overlay mosaic crochet is the striking two-color technique behind those sharply geometric blankets and cushions: you work one color per row, alternating every row, and never carry or change colors mid-row. The pattern appears through drop-down double crochets — marked X on the chart — worked into the front loop of the stitch two rows below, so a vertical bar of your current color covers the other color's row.
Because each row is a single color and every X is worked from the row above, a mosaic chart has strict internal logic — you can't just color squares freely and call it mosaic. That derivation is exactly what this tool automates: it picks the row-color striping, places every X, counts them, and warns about the one genuine limitation (the top chart row can't be covered — give it a plain closing row).

How do I read a mosaic crochet chart? ▾
Each row is worked in one color (the row's letter in the written instructions). Plain cells are sc in the back loop only; a cell marked X is a double crochet worked into the FRONT loop of the stitch two rows directly below, in front of the last row. Work with the right side always facing.
What is the foundation for mosaic crochet? ▾
Chain your stitch count and work two plain sc rows — the setup block tells you which color each is. They anchor the drop-down dcs of the first chart rows and are not shown on the chart.
Why does the yarn get cut at the end of every row? ▾
Classic overlay mosaic is worked with the right side always facing, so you fasten off at the end of each row and start the next from the same side. The ends become fringe, or you crochet a border over them. (Flat turned mosaic exists, but X charts assume the cut method.)
Which two colors should I use? ▾
Any two with strong contrast — the chart is colorway-agnostic (Color A = main, Color B = contrast). The setup block shows exactly how many stitches of each color the design uses, so you can size your yarn purchase.
Why can't the top row show the contrast color? ▾
An X always comes from the row above the cell it covers — and the top chart row has no row above it. If your design needs contrast color in the top row, the tool warns you: add a plain closing row above the chart, or edit those cells.
Can I edit the design after converting? ▾
Yes — open Edit Pattern and click or drag to flip cells between the two colors. The X chart, written rows, and counts re-derive instantly from your edits.
Is this the same as interlocking crochet? ▾
No — interlocking (LFM) crochet weaves two separate meshes through each other and uses different charts. This tool is for overlay mosaic: one fabric, one color per row, drop-down dcs. It's the technique most "mosaic crochet" patterns and videos teach.
What size will my blanket or cushion be? ▾
Enter your gauge (stitches and rows per 4 in / 10 cm; the default matches worsted sc) and the setup block plus the finished-size line show the panel dimensions in inches and centimeters.
